Dishwasher leaving dishes wet? What to check before booking.
Learn why plastic containers, loading, rinse aid and cycle choices affect dishwasher drying, and when a recurring change needs a repair assessment.

Start with what is still wet.
A few droplets on a plastic container are different from a whole load that suddenly stays wet. Plastic can be harder to dry than glass or ceramic, and recesses in cups or containers can collect water. Those observations alone do not prove that a heater has failed.
Look at the result after the program has finished, following your manual’s unloading guidance. Note whether plates and glasses are dry, whether the problem affects one rack, and whether the dishes are clean. Water remaining in the bottom of the machine is a separate drainage concern worth mentioning.
Check the selected cycle and drying option.
Dishwashers do not all dry in the same way. Some use a heated drying option; others use condensation drying or additional model-specific features. Your manual explains what the selected program is intended to do.
Check whether a drying option was turned off or a different program was selected. Use an option such as Heated Dry or Extra Dry only if your model provides it and your dishes are suitable for it. Allow the full program to finish. You do not need to run repeated test cycles or touch internal parts to find out whether they are hot.
Review rinse aid and loading.
Rinse aid helps water run off dishware. Check the dispenser indicator and follow your model’s instructions for filling and adjusting it. Use a product intended for the dishwasher’s rinse-aid compartment; follow the product label as well as the appliance manual.
Leave space between items, avoid nesting bowls, and position dishwasher-safe containers so water can drain. Keep the spray arms and dispenser clear. Follow the manufacturer’s rack placement instructions, particularly for plastics. These everyday adjustments can improve drying, but they are not a diagnosis of an ongoing fault.
Know when to arrange an assessment.
Consider service if drying has become consistently worse despite using the usual suitable load and recommended settings. A recurring error, interrupted program or change in washing performance gives the technician more to investigate. The correct checks depend on the model and its drying system; wet dishes are not enough evidence to order a replacement part.
Stop using a dishwasher that leaks onto the floor, smells burnt or repeatedly trips a breaker. Leave panels, wiring and built-in removal to a service professional. Do not reach inside to test a heating element or bypass a door lock.
Describe the change in your booking request.
A useful example is: “The glasses and plates used to dry on the normal program, but the last few loads stayed wet. The program finishes, there is no visible water in the bottom, and this is the drying option I selected.” If only plastic containers remain wet, say that instead.
Include the brand, accessible model number, cycle and drying option, any exact error code, and when the change began. Choose Not drying dishes on our dishwasher repair page or select Other / Not sure if another description fits better. You write the description in your own words.

Choose the next step from the result.
If only recessed containers hold droplets, review their position and your model’s drying instructions. If plates, glasses and cutlery all stay wet after the usual completed program, describe that wider change. If dishes are also dirty or water remains in the tub, include those symptoms so the assessment can consider washing and drainage as well as drying.
Your questions, answered.
Do wet plastic containers mean the dishwasher heater is broken?
No. Plastics and recessed surfaces can retain water even when other dishes dry. Compare the whole load and the selected drying option. A new, persistent drying problem needs assessment before a failed part can be identified.
Should every dishwasher use Heated Dry?
No. Drying systems and available options differ. Use the instructions for your exact model and suitable dishware; a condensation-drying dishwasher may not have the same controls as one with a heated-dry option.
Which problem should I select if dishes are wet and water remains inside?
Choose Not draining if standing water after the completed program is the main concern, and describe the wet dishes too. If the tub drains normally but drying has changed, choose Not drying dishes. You can use Other / Not sure when neither fits.
